The Northstar Condition

Affecting Northstar Engines From 1993-2005

The Northstar engine rarely exhibits typical blown head gasket symptoms. Initial overheating issues can usually be traced to component failure and repaired. The first indication that some residual problem still exists begins with a low coolant light.

You check for leaks and everything looks good. Your mechanic checks the cooling system and also finds nothing wrong. In fact, most Cadillacs can idle all day and not loose a drop of coolant or overheat. However, as soon as you get on the freeway the temperature starts to go up and the low coolant light appears again. When you check the coolant level it's very low frequently requiring a gallon or more to refill. Without any clear indication as to what’s causing the problem your mechanic may suggest replacing various cooling system components. Again, this may resolve the problem for a while. But soon the low coolant light re-appears.

Trial and error diagnostics - In a desperate attempt to get the overheating problem under control your mechanic may suggest replacing the water pump even though there are no signs of leakage. This rarely solves the problem and the mechanic rarely offers to give your money back. If you've started down this path stop and get proper diagnostic help.

What You Really Need to Know

Blown head gaskets are one of the most expensive automotive repairs you will ever encounter and they are frequently misdiagnosed.

Head gasket damage often goes undetected after other suspected cooling system components have been repaired. When this happens your car will continue to overheat with no obvious reason why. An experienced mechanic will normally perform a Block Test to determine if exhaust gases are present in the cooling system. That simple test verifies the condition of the head gasket and should be part of the diagnostic process.

Beware

Avoid Companies That...

  • Charge more for an eight cylinder than a four cylinder engine. Ninety percent of the time cylinder head gasket failure occurs in two cylinders next to each other. Factors requiring increased quantities of chemical include severely damaged gaskets and cooling systems larger than a five gallon capacity - not number of cylinders.
  • Claim to have "special formulas" for your specific vehicles. These companies have no real technical support. A blown head gasket is a breach between the water jacket around the cylinder and the combustion chamber. The object is to effectively repair that breach. Separate "formulas" for different vehicles do not exist.
  • Claims to give Lifetime Warranties that are conditional. Any company that requires you to spend more money to get back the money you have already spent should be avoided. What you want is an Unconditional Money Back Guarantee without third party verification and inflated return shipping costs.
  • Incredible unsubstantiated facts:
    • Stronger than original head gasket
    • 95% success rate
    • Permanent Fix
    • Lifetime Repair
    • Mechanic's Choice
  • Your should not accept a retreatment from a company before you know why the first treatment did not work. In most cases the retreament voids your warranty.
